Chapter 6 Statements of all Involved

We had heard several shots earlier today but a little before 7:00 pm me, my brother (Josh),and my dad (Jerry) heard more shots that were so close we could hear them going through the tree's around out house. I had went inside and when I came back out my dad told me Josh had went to talk to the guys and he was not armed. I grabbed my Ruger 9mm and went down to where the shots were coming from. I got approximately 50 yards away and I could see them. There was                     of them I layed my gun and holster on the ground and then I approached them.  When I walked up I said are you Skip Dowdy and he said "yes I am". I said you may not remember me but I remember you. Two of them pointed guns at me and then I got hit in the back of the head, by the a brown haired boy that was 18-21 wearing a blue t-shirt.  At that point, I grabbed the shot gun from him and I was holding the shot gun by the pump and had started backing away, that's when that same boy pulled a silver colored  gun from his pocket and he shot me inthe leg. I  dropped to the ground and I started yelling for brother. The guys were telling me there wasn't anyone gonna come help me.  I told them to call 911 and they said "we ain't call   no one". Then they started packing up their chairs and other stuff.  My brother ran down  to me and they pointed all their guns at his face. Josh was telling them he was not armed and he reached in his pocket to get his phone to call 911 and the blonde hair kid w/ the transformer t-shirt on ran up and put the shot gun in his face. My brother called 911. my dad came down also and same guy that shot me pointed the gun at my father's face.  I was afraid he was going to shoot my dad. Skip Dowdy and the other 2 guys took off walking in opposite directions and then later on the cops and everyone showed up.

HOW FAR WILL SHOTGUN PELLETS TRAVEL?

 

Getting sprayed with no. 8 pellets from 100 yards away in a dove field is an inconvenience while a hail of No. 4s from that distance can be more than uncomfortable. Just what is the maximum range of shotgun pellets fired from a conventional shotgun?
“Pellets from 12-gauge target loads fired at flying target will likely fall to the ground inside of 200 yards,” says shooting expert Frank Ventimiglia, vice-president of Shooter’s Choice gun care products. “Larger shot used for hunting will probably carry about 100 yards farther.

“Don’t confuse maximum range with effective range, however. The maximum effective range of hunting-sized lead shot – that is the range at which it patterns sufficiently and still carries lethal energy — is about 65 yards while the maximum effective range of steel shot is about 50 yards  

They claim they were getting pelted by our shot as you can see this is as an absolute Impossibility, Justin Yandell was enraged and wanted to kill me, he went in the house and got his gun he tucked it into the back of his shorts and he came down and drew his gun to shoot me, but wait he says he laid it down ten paces from the fence according to the trial transcript, which is approximately 30 feet from the fence, then he said he laid his gun own 50 yards away from us which is 150 feet from us, from where we are it is over 600 feet to  the fence, over 700 feet to the barn and over 800 feet to the house and notice all the trees between where we were and their property, Folks it’s just one big lie after another, That night the detectives on scene told us that Justin Yandell should have never crossed the fence, should have never come over there with a gun and should have called the White county Sheriffs office and let them deal with it, Jeff Williams stated at trial he didn’t even go look to see if what they said was true he didn’t look for any signs of pellets hitting there property

I Josh Yandell do hereby make the following statement to Deputy Jeff Williams.

I was out on the back porch with my family. The kids were playing in the back and we started hearing shots and the shot falling on our building.

I approached our fence and started hollering at some people asking if they had permission to hunt on the land. I saw a blonde haired guy and a kid, My brother walked up behind me and he had his pistol in his waist in the holster. The guy we talked to said he had permission and that Skip Doty was across the field and it was his land.

I turned to take the kids back to my Dad and my brother walked down to talk to Skip and his son. When my brother started walking the blonde guy followed him gave me an uneasy feeling, I rushed the kids back to my dad and when I closed the gate I heard a shot that did not sound like a shotgun. I then ran to the fence and started yelling my brothers name, I could hear him yell back so I crossed the fence and started running toward him, When I ran past a big cedar tree I could hear him screaming and then I saw him lying on the ground. When I rounded the tree everyone pointed there guns at me The blonde guy and Skip had shotguns and Skips son had a pistol , Skips son came at me with the pistol pointing it at me and screaming at me do you have a gun, I will shoot you just like I shot your brother, I told him I was unarmed and in my Pajamas, I put my hand into the air and reached into my pocket with my right hand to get my phone, When I did this Skip told me he would blow my head off.

I got my phone and called 911 they still were yelling at me, I told them not to leave the cops were coming and the blonde haired guy grabbed some shotguns and he had my brothers pistol and walked off. While I was down there with my brother my wife called and I switched over and told her to tell dad they shot my brother, After that I could hear my dad coming on the Rhino and Skips son still had me at gun point. Dad pulled up on the Rhino and when he saw Justin dad yelled at them you shot my boy Skip then walked up to my dad and grabbed his shotgun with both hands and lunged like he was going to butt stroke my dad, I then grabbed Skips shotgun and my Dad and I tried to get his gun away, Skips son ran up pointing the pistol at us with his fi9nger on the trigger yelling that he would kill us. We quit trying to get the gun and dad drove the rhino and parked it behind one of there trucks because they were trying to leave. Shortly after that we saw the first cop and tried to wave him in to help. At this time all of the Doty's walked off and it was just me and my brother. I tried to stop the bleeding on my brothers wound until help arrived. Not long after that some cops and my dad came don on the Rhino and we loaded my brother up and took him to the ambulance.

I Jerry Yandell do hereby make the following statement to Deputy Jeff Williams.

On Sept 1, 2013 around 5 or 6 PM I was setting on the back porch having something cold to drink after bailing hay all day. My oldest boy Justin was at the side of the house working on something my youngest son Josh was standing next to the porch on his way out to burn trash.  My oldest grandbaby . was riding his electric 4 wheeler between the barn and the house. I heard a shot sounded like shot gun I commented to Josh that it sounded close and it sounded like it came from Mr. Quattlebaums place (John).  Call John see if anyone had permission to hunt (answered no) heard another shot buckshot hit the barn and SUV close to it ..grandson) just behind SUV. Justin ran to et  

                                                                                   • brought him to porch. He ask me did I hear that I said yes (I am hard hearing but I did hear buck shot hitting loud on barn) Justin went to investigate.  Several min later I heard a pistol shot. Josh took off running toward shot several min later I got a phone call Justin had been shot. I grabbed the keys to Johns gate (Imow and take care of the Quattlebaum property  so I am very familiar with the property) Got in the Rhino (side by side ATV) and took off to shooting location (about 5 to 7 min when I got to location Justin was laying on the ground and Josh had him in his arms 2 men one heavy set older man had a shotgun in the waist shooting position the other man tall thin dark hair was not armed that I could see a third man heavy set light hair was about 50 feet down the tree line. As I approached he turned toward me he had 2 shotguns in his arms and my sons pistol under his arm I know it was my sons (Justin) pistol recognized black holster it was in.  He turned back and started walking away. I drove the rhino toward two men standing over my sons with gun (at this time the only information I had was my son Justin had been shot) very fast tried to hit them they jumped out of the way and I stopped the Rhino between them and my sons. I got out went to Justin Checked his condition had a bullet wound to knee no arterial bleeding saw it was not life threatening  (Iam a combat veteran). I then went around the rhino and was trying to disarm heavy set older man he resisted and a light scuffle ensued. The tall thin man pulled a pistol pointed it to my face said he would kill me you son of a bitch (it was a 9mm brushed stainless steel with a 3 in barrel) Josh came from behind me and put him self between me and the pistol a lot of cussing and threats in all that screaming Josh said to 911 operator something about him being recorded the this dark haired man then put pistol away and started hurriedly packing a back pack. I then turned to Josh told him I was going to the road to flag down law checked Justin again said id get help. I then went to the road went to land gate (by Tommy Reeves Place) their truck was parked at the end of it. The light haired man was already coming toward the gate where I parked the rhino to block any retreat. He approached me with a woman (who I don't know where she came from or who she was) He started cussing and going on about right to hunt and there property I pulled on the gate to try and close gate he pulled against it to keep it open more cussing an he and woman turned and started walking back toward their truck.  1 or 2 min later officer arrived I waived him down approached his car and another officer arrived. Officer asked where shooting was they both got in the rhino and I took them to where my son Justin was shot the Officers helped us load Justin in the back of the Rhino and we took him to the road and loaded him in the ambulance.  I then told the officers that Josh and I would at the house it they needed to talk.

I am going to pause right here and ask if any of you notice something missing? One very huge detail and just as a matter of fact Jerry Yandell would have absolutely had to have Run smooth over a guy Named Berry Reynolds who was standing right in the gap of the trees that Jerry Came through, now you just tell me how, not a single one of these people mentioned Ever seeing Berry Reynolds as he stood there and watched all this happen. Now I will post Berry Reynolds Statement and you put together all the pieces from each one of these statements, how it all just fell into place! I would also like to point out the Dates, Jeff Williams according to his own statement didn't even know Berry Reynolds existed until the 4th of September when he got a call from Josh Yandell!

I Berry Reynolds do hereby make the following statement to Deputy Jeff Williams.

                                                                                                                                                                        

On September 1, 2013 I was watching some people hunting on the property next to me. I was watching through binoculars and I saw a young man walking up to the hunters.  I saw him take something out of his waistband and set it on the ground but I couldn't tell what it was. The only person out there I recognized was Skip Doty

The young man walked up to them with his hands up but when he was talking to Skip and the younger guy in a blue shirt he put his hands down. Shortly after he put his hands the guy in the blue shirt hit the man in the head with the butt of his shotgun. After that the two men struggled for the shotgun. The young man that got shot ended up with the shotgun he had it in his left hand and his other hand was up in the air. He was backing up away from the other men when I heard the shot and seen him fall. I thought they had killed him. I saw the young man in the blue shirt had a pistol and then I heard the man yelling and I knew he was alive.

Next I saw Josh Yandell running down to check on his brother. When he ran up the Doty's group had there guns pointed at them and they stood over the Yandells. I could hear a lot of yelling and I could hear Skip Doty saying he would kill people and blow there heads off.

The next thing I saw was Jerry Yandell driving down to his son on a side by side ATV. Jerry Drove up to Skip and tried to take his shotgun. Then the young man in the blue shirt pointed that pistol in Jerry's face and told him he would blow his head off. Jerry drove out and left his son lying in the field

I also saw the young man who was walking with the kid go pick up what the guy who got shot layed down and then they walked off. The one thing I know was that boy was not a threat to them and he did not deserve to be shot..

This is a truthful statement as given by me to Detective Jeff Williams .

Victims Statements

Statement of George Doty

My Son and son in law were dove hunting when a man approached in a very threatening manner and he say's which on of you is Skip Doty and I said that would be me. He said you may not remember me but I damn sure remember you and reached around with his right arm at what I found out later was a gun, at which time my son hit him in the back of the head with his shotgun, the man grabbed his gun and began pointing it at all of us at that time my son grabbed a pistol that I had that was on my side but was laying on the chair I was sitting on and shot him in the knee which made him put the gun down. I checked on him to see how bad he was injured and then his brother came over and he called and then once I settled down enough I called 911 and talked to dispatch on my son in laws phone as mine was at the truck. A little while later the guys father came over and tried to run us over on his ATV he jumped out and tried to take my gun away from me without success, a lot of shouting later he left and didn't take his son with him. We gathered our dove hinting chairs and stuff and came to the truck and waited for Law enforcement to arrive. We confiscated his pistol and unloaded our weapons and put them in the truck.

I Jesse Wood do hereby make the following statement to Deputy Det. Cochran

Me and my son were walking down the power line to try to roust a dove. I made contact with a dove and my son went to fetch dove. We were then confronted by 2 men one yielding a stainless handgun. He was cool when I told him who I was, but when I mentioned Skip he became "furious" and said he wanted to settle something. His friend told him not to show out or something along that, and he said "Skips gonna get what he has coming" he then tucked said handgun into back of black shorts. He walked towards where Skip was. When he got their he was within a couple feet of Skip. Skip told him to go and they was a little louder and the guy reached for his gun. Adam then hit him with the butt stock and on the guys way down he grabbed the gun keeping himself on his feet. They (all three) were wrestling over the gun. The guy gained control over the gun and tried to turn it and that's when he was shot by Adam.  Then I took my son to the truck  told him to call 911 and when I returned I saw an older man bear hugging Skip he was on a Polaris and I began to run to back him up. Before I arrived the older man, I believe is the suspects father was trying to take Skip& shotgun.  After he left I went back to the truck and saw the Polaris at the gate.  When I went down there the man shoved me and hit me with the gate. He then sat at the gate and I returned to my son. All 3 men suspect, suspect's dad and suspects friend threatened me with bodily harm, were trespassing and the suspect assaulted my family with a firearm. I am describing this in my best memory, but there was a lot going on.

I Adam F Doty do hereby make the following statement to Deputy Sgt. Kevin Smith of the White County Sheriff's Department this concerning shooting this occurred at Quattlebaum Rd. On the 01 day

of Sept 2013.

 I, Adam Doty, my father Skip Doty, Jesse Wood -brother in law, and  nephew were dove hunting on our property. Jesse and  were on one side of the field while my father and I sat in lawn chairs on the opposing side of the field. A shitless man with a pistol tucked into his belt approached Jesse and Tristan and bean cursing stating we were on his property . Jesse replied "no" and said that Skip Doty and Vivian Doty were immediate family and that he needed to speak with Skip Doty. The gentleman then crossed the fence with his pistol, walked approximately 100 yds. and confronted my father saying that he had a problem. The man said "you may not remember me but I sure remember you" all the while getting closer to my father. My dad told him that was close enough, about 8ft from my dad in his Jawn chair, and the man reached for his gun. I was within reach of the man when grabbed his gun tried to swing with my shotgun to stop him. He grabbed my shotgun while dropping his pistol and after a brief scuffle he started waiving my shotgun at my father and brother in law while my nephew hid behind a tree. My dad had his gun drawn screaming "don't shoot" and the guy said he was going to  blow his head off. Scared for my life and the lives of my family I reached for a pistol laying in the lawn chair where my dad sat and shot the man in the leg to hopefully diffuse the situation. We got the shotgun away from the man and called 911.  During this time that man was yelling for a friend who also trespassed with a pistol onto our land yelling that we were in trouble and that he was calling the police. At that time he also called the guy's father who drove an ATV onto our land trying to run over me then jumped off while it was still rolling and wrestled with my father to try and get his gun. I grabbed the mans pistol off the round and held it on him until he left when police sirens were in hearing range. Once the situation seemed to be diffused we walked to the truck and waited for the police to arrive

We were hunting and those guys came out and starting talking to us. The guy that got shot said "PawPaw (Skip Doty) was going to get whats coming to him." The drawed gun Uncle Adam fought back and the guy pointed the gun at Uncle Adam and PawPaw shot him in the leg with his pistol. Dad (Jesse Wood) told him to get inthe truck so I locked the door and call the cops
