Chapter 2 Johnny Quattlebaum

On February 16th 1980 I married Vivian Quattlebum daughter of Bueal and Vera Quattlebum, in June of 1987 Bueal Died of a heart attack and left his wife and three children with 11 acres of land on Quattlebaum Road he had inherited from his father, there was 80 acres divided up between all of his Children in 1977, Bueal was a great man someone whom I admired and respected a deacon at Mt. Hebron Baptist church where Vivian and I met, as most fathers he didn’t much like me at first but once he seen that I was there to stay and do well by his Daughter we became good friends.

When he died his Brother Johnny Quattlebaum asked his wife and the three girls if he could run his cows on the land they owned and in exchange he would keep the fences mended and mow the grass and keep it looking just like Bueal left it so they agreed to let him do that, it didn’t take long before that promise was broken, he let parts of it grow up where you couldn’t walk through it anymore, the fences to this day have never been touched the only thing holding them up is the trees and brush that grew up around them, the one time that any of the fence was replaced was when the neighbor replaced it after Johnnys bull tore it down, when the neighbor asked for help in rebuilding the fence from Johnny , Johnny Quattlebaum told him it wasn’t his fence and he wasn’t going to pay for anything.

On many occasions Vera asked him to remove his cows from the land because he wasn’t doing what he agreed to do only to be told she would have to build a fence which she could not afford.

On many occasions I would go to the land to fish and find trash and beer cans and sometimes people fishing in the pond that Johnny Quattlebaum had given permission to, I had many conversations with Johnny and told him to not be giving people permission to go there as well as Vera my mother in law had told him the same thing but he never stopped, he had told all the neighbors up there that since I was not a Quattlebaum that I didn’t have any right to be there or have any say , which by state law was incorrect because I was married to someone who owned the land and it legally bound me to it as such.

A short time after he had put his cows up there I went there to go fishing and found a tree stand on the property overlooking the pond, I called Vera and told her about it and she told me no one had permission outside the family to be there and for me to remove the deer stand, so I did, Johnny called me and asked me about it and I told him I took it down because no one had a right to put it there, it belonged to one of his friends whom he had told could hunt there, I found out years later it was our neighbors deer stand, Johnny told everyone that I stole this deer stand which was not true, I simply did what Vera asked me to do, but it made a lot of people mad at me and apparently Johnny was quite ashamed by telling his friend he could hunt there when he didn’t have the rights to tell anyone they could hunt so he just told them I stole their deer stand instead.

Several times I found people on the land and asked them who they were and who told them they could be there and Johnny Quattlebaum was always the one who had given them permission, and every time I would have to tell them that Johnny didn’t have any rights there and that they could not be on the property always calling Johnny and telling him the same.

In October of 2010 or 2011 I had given my Son in law written permission to bow hunt up there, he went up there and parked his truck at the gate and walked in, when he reached his stand he could hear someone honking their horn and screaming whoever owns this white truck better get out here or he was going to cut his tires, so he climbs down and goes to the truck and talks to the man that was in such a rage and asked him what the problem was, the man was Justin Yandell whose father owned some land on the back side of our property, he asked Jesse who he was and what was he doing , Jesse replied he was hunting, he asked who gave him permission to hunt and Jesse showed him the written permission paper I had given him that included my phone number, Justin Yandell then calls Johnny Quattlebaum and Johnny tells him I don’t have the right to give anyone permission to be there because I’m not a Quattlebaum and Jesse is told to leave, Justin Yandell then calls me cursing me out for letting Jesses hunt up there and what Jonny Quattlebaum had said to him, I informed Justin Yandell at that time that Johnny Had no rights to give anyone permission and that if he had given him permission to be there that I was revoking them and that if he was ever caught on that property he would be arrested for trespassing, The Yandells had some mean dogs that they let roam and on more than one occasion they came to the pond we were fishing at and threatened to bite us, I told Justin Yandell if any of his dogs ever bit one of my grand children I was going to kill his dog so he better not let his dog come back over there and I hung up on this crazy person who just called me up and cursed me out for giving permission to a family member to hunt on our family property!

That’s was the first and last Conversation I had with Justin Yandell until the day of the shooting, I had never met him before or since and could not tell you even what he looked like and in fact it was the craziest phone call I had ever had, just plain nuts from someone who had zero rights to even be involved with that land at all he had no reason to care who was on the land or what they were doing or why they were doing it but yet he threatened to cut a man’s tires and then called me and cursed me out, over something that was absolutely none of his business!

Johnny Quattlebaum was the answer, he had everyone up there convinced that he owned all of that land when in fact he only owns 22 of the 80 or so acres up there, Johnny Quattlebaum had poisoned the entire community against me because I was the only Male in the family that would ever stand up to him, he lied about me and totally Convinced the Justin Yandell and the rest of his family that I had no right to be on that property, on the day of the Shooting the Yandells called Johnny and asked him if he had given anyone permission to be up there hunting, he said no and to run them off, the land we were on did not belong to Johnny Quattlebaum as a matter of fact no one in this family has ever been on Johnny Quattlebaums land up there in 25 years. From 1987 to 2013 Johnny Never replaced any fences never bush hogged the whole thing and never once even offered a pound of hamburger meat to anyone in the family for allowing him the privilege of using the land, now these were his brothers children and wife whom he had taken advantage of for 26 years, he had been asked to remove his cows several times because he didn’t do what he said he would do, after the shooting he was told by all three children and their Mother in front of a White county deputy to remove his cows and his reply once again was for us to build a fence which is what we finally did!

How awful to have a relative so mean!! His Brother would be so ashamed at his actions and how he has turned out! Bueal Quattlebum was a great man whom I respected so much. Miss him so bad and wish he was here to face his brother and shame him.

  2. I put a great deal of the blame on Johnny Quattlebaum for this whole thing happening, his actions and what he told all those people up there especially Justin Yandell to make them think we were not suppose to be where we were, we weren't even close to any of Johnny's property but he had all those people thinking it was all his property and because of that this shooting occurred!

  3. Johnny Quattlebaum also went to the Sheriffs office and told them that we were on Uncle Claytons land which we found out later we were about 20 feet on Uncle Claytons land to be clear there are 33 acres combined between Bobby Clayton and Bueal with no fences between so no one knew exactly where the property lines were, but he did this to spite us for being thrown off the land, my wife and I were at the sheriffs office the day he went in and he stopped and said to her" you do realize if your Dad hadn't given yopu any land you wouldn't own that? which was quite stupid because that's how he got the land he had, as a matter of fact I owned property that I paid for many years before Johnny Quattlebaum did other than what his daddy gave him!
